AEO in Australia: An AI Search Guide for Australian Businesses

AEO in Australia means making your website the source AI assistants cite when Australian buyers ask about your category. Google rolled out AI Overviews Australia-wide in October 2024, and Google handles most searches. Australian businesses win by answering local questions in Australian terms, with prices in dollars and named cities, and by capturing leads within the Spam Act.
Australia has the same problem as Canada and the UK: it shares a language with the US, so generic questions often get answered from American pages. The way through is the same too. Be the obviously Australian answer to the questions Australian buyers actually ask.
How does AI search work in Australia?
AI search in Australia runs mostly through Google. Google tested AI Overviews locally in September 2024 and announced on October 29, 2024 that it was "rolling out AI Overviews Australia wide" (Google Australia).
StatCounter puts Google at 87.61% of Australian search engine market share in October 2026, with Bing at 9.4% (StatCounter). That Bing share is higher than many Australian businesses assume, and Bing also feeds Microsoft Copilot, which a lot of Australian offices use. Submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console.
ChatGPT and Perplexity run alongside both. Their search crawlers, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, need to be allowed in your robots.txt and by your host's bot protection.
What should Australian businesses focus on for AEO?
Australian businesses should focus on the questions American pages can't answer well. That's where an Australian business has a natural advantage, and where most haven't claimed it yet.
Answer the Australian version of the question
"How much does a website cost?" has endless American answers. "How much does a website cost for a small business in Brisbane?" has far fewer good Australian ones. Questions involving GST, ABNs, state rules, Australian dollars, the ATO or Australian standards are ones American pages can't answer properly. Write the page that does.
Name your cities and states
"Servicing clients Australia-wide" gives an assistant nothing to match. Buyers ask about places: "bookkeepers in Parramatta for tradies", "IT support in Perth for medical practices". Name the cities, regions and industries you serve. For local businesses, keep your Google Business Profile current, because Google's AI features read it.
Use Australian words and spelling
Australian buyers say "tradie", "GST" and "sole trader", and they spell "organisation" and "colour". A page written in American terms answers a slightly different question from the one being asked. Matching the buyer's words removes one more reason for an assistant to prefer a competitor.
Publish prices in dollars
Australian buyers ask assistants what things cost. The businesses cited in those answers are the ones that publish real ranges in Australian dollars. "From $2,500 for a five-page site" is a fact an assistant can use. "Contact us for a quote" isn't.
Say who you're not for
A clear limit, such as "doesn't take projects under $5,000" or "works only with businesses in Victoria", helps the right buyer pick you and gives an assistant a precise, quotable fact. Why positioning matters more than any tactic explains why this works.
What are the Australian rules for capturing leads by email?
Australia's Spam Act 2003 applies to commercial emails and SMS, and it's consent-based. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) summarises the rules: you need the recipient's consent before you send, each message must identify you and include your contact details, and every message needs a way to unsubscribe (ACMA).
ACMA says unsubscribe requests must be honoured within 5 working days, the unsubscribe option must not charge a fee or require a login, and it must keep working for at least 30 days after the message is sent. You must also be able to prove consent if ACMA asks, including where another business sends messages on your behalf.
For a lead capture form serving Australian buyers:
- ask for the email with a clear statement of what you'll send
- don't pre-tick any consent box
- keep a record of when and how each person consented
- include your business name, contact details and a working unsubscribe link in every email
- link to a privacy policy that covers the form
Australia's Privacy Act also applies to many businesses that collect personal information. This is orientation, not legal advice. Check your obligations with an Australian lawyer if email is a major channel for you.
Where should you start with AEO in Australia?
- Fix crawler access and indexing, and submit your sitemap to both Google and Bing.
- List the ten questions Australian buyers ask before hiring you, including the ones with cities, GST and dollar amounts in them.
- Rewrite your service and pricing pages to open with direct answers, with prices in dollars and named places.
- Make your business name, ABN, address and description identical across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
- Ask Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot those questions every month, and record what comes back.

Frequently asked questions
When did Google AI Overviews launch in Australia?
Google tested AI Overviews in Australia from September 2024 and announced on October 29, 2024 that it was rolling them out Australia-wide.
Does Bing matter for SEO in Australia?
More than many businesses assume. StatCounter puts Bing at 9.4% of Australian search engine market share in October 2026, and Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing. Submitting your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools takes minutes and is worth doing.
Do I need consent to email leads in Australia?
Yes. Under the Spam Act 2003, commercial emails need the recipient's consent, must identify the sender with contact details, and must include an unsubscribe option. ACMA says unsubscribe requests must be honoured within 5 working days, and you must be able to prove consent.
Is AEO different for Australian businesses?
The method is the same everywhere: let AI crawlers in, answer buyers' questions in quotable sentences, keep business facts consistent, and measure what assistants say. In Australia, the edge comes from answering local questions in Australian terms, with dollar prices and named cities, which American pages can't do.
