How to Show Up in Perplexity Answers: A Guide for Businesses

How to show up in Perplexity starts with access. Perplexity's search crawler, PerplexityBot, has to be allowed by your robots.txt and your firewall. After that, you need pages that answer buyers' questions directly in their opening lines, with specific claims that name your business. Perplexity cites its sources openly, so a clear answer is easy to spot.
Perplexity is the AI assistant that looks most like a search engine. Every answer comes with numbered sources, and readers click them. That makes it one of the more valuable assistants to be cited in, and one of the easiest to check. You can see exactly which pages it used and which it ignored.
How does Perplexity choose which websites to cite?
Perplexity searches the web for each question, reads candidate pages and writes an answer with numbered citations to the pages it relied on. Like other AI companies, it doesn't publish exactly how it ranks sources. What you can observe is consistent across many queries: cited pages usually answer the question directly and early, and say something specific.
Perplexity documents two crawlers, and the difference matters (Perplexity):
- PerplexityBot "is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." Perplexity says it isn't used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
- Perplexity-User "supports user actions within Perplexity". It visits a page when a user's question needs it. Because a person asked for the fetch, Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt rules.
For showing up in Perplexity's answers, PerplexityBot is the one to get right.
How to show up in Perplexity, step by step
Step 1: Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If it blocks all bots, or names PerplexityBot in a Disallow rule, you're likely keeping yourself out of Perplexity's search results. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot explicitly, and says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to reach its systems. Many robots.txt files were copied from templates written before AI search existed, and block more than anyone intended.
Step 2: Check your firewall and bot protection
This is where most sites fail without knowing it. Hosting providers and CDNs increasingly block AI crawlers by default, or challenge them with checks a bot can't pass.
Perplexity's documentation is specific about this. It recommends matching both the user agent and Perplexity's published IP ranges in your firewall rules, placing the allow rule above any blocking rules, and keeping the IP list updated from its official endpoints, because the ranges change. It also notes that in Cloudflare, Bot Fight Mode can still challenge matching bots, because custom firewall rules can't skip it. If you use Cloudflare, check that setting specifically.
Step 3: Answer the question in the first lines
Perplexity pulls short passages into its answers. A page that buries the answer under three paragraphs of background is harder to use than one that states it up front.
Open each important page with a 40 to 60 word direct answer, then expand. Use the buyer's question as the heading. Write one claim per sentence, and name your business in the claim instead of saying "we", so the sentence still makes sense when it's quoted on its own.
Step 4: Be the specific source
When Perplexity has five pages that say roughly the same thing, it doesn't need yours. Pages get cited when they add something the others don't: a clear position, a specific number with a source, a named process, a precise statement of who something is for.
Compare "Our team provides comprehensive bookkeeping services" with "Acme Bookkeeping handles monthly books for restaurants with one to five locations, and doesn't take clients outside hospitality." Only the second answers a question a buyer would ask. (Acme is a placeholder name.)
Step 5: Keep your facts consistent elsewhere
Perplexity cites many sources in one answer, often mixing your site with directories, review sites and articles about you. If those describe your business differently, the answer gets muddled. Use the same name, location and one-sentence description on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
Step 6: Check Perplexity every month
Perplexity is the easiest assistant to audit, because the sources are listed. Each month, ask it the questions your buyers ask, and record:
- whether your site is cited, and which page
- which competitors are cited instead
- what the cited competitor pages say that yours doesn't
That last column is the most useful one. It tells you exactly what to write. Check your analytics for referral visits from perplexity.ai too.
What doesn't help you show up in Perplexity?
- Volume. Publishing many thin articles adds pages that say what Perplexity can already say without you.
- Keyword stuffing. Perplexity reads the page to answer a question. Repetition makes the answer harder to find.
- Blocking training bots and assuming that's all. Blocking AI training crawlers is a reasonable choice. Accidentally blocking search crawlers along with them isn't. Check each bot by name.
Is Perplexity worth optimising for separately?
Mostly, no, and that's good news. The work that gets you cited in Perplexity also gets you cited in ChatGPT and Google's AI features: crawler access, direct answers, specific claims and consistent facts. The parts unique to Perplexity are allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and your firewall, and using its visible citations to learn what's working.
The ChatGPT equivalent is in how to get cited by ChatGPT. The full technical check across every assistant is the AI search audit. If you'd rather have it done for you, see what a good AEO service should include.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my website cited by Perplexity?
Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in your firewall or CDN settings, then publish pages that answer buyers' questions directly in their opening lines, with specific claims that name your business. Check monthly which pages Perplexity cites for your buyers' questions.
What is PerplexityBot?
PerplexityBot is Perplexity's search crawler. Perplexity says it is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity's search results, and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Perplexity recommends allowing it in robots.txt, because blocking it can keep your site out of Perplexity's search results.
Does Perplexity respect robots.txt?
Perplexity manages PerplexityBot's access through robots.txt, recommends allowing it there, and says changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect. Its other agent, Perplexity-User, fetches pages when a user's question needs them and generally ignores robots.txt, because a person requested the fetch.
Why isn't Perplexity citing my website?
The most common reasons are that PerplexityBot is blocked by robots.txt or bot protection, your pages don't answer the question in their opening lines, or competing pages make a more specific claim. Compare the pages Perplexity does cite with yours to see the difference.
