How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: A Guide for Businesses

To get your business cited by ChatGPT, make sure OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, can reach your site. Then publish pages that answer your buyers' questions in specific, self-contained sentences that name your business. ChatGPT cites pages it can retrieve and quote. Nobody can guarantee a citation, but you can remove every reason not to get one.
Most businesses that want to get cited by ChatGPT start in the wrong place. They look for a trick: a special file, a magic phrase, a schema type. There isn't one. What there is, is a short list of things that make a page easy to retrieve and easy to quote, and a longer list of habits that make it neither. This guide covers both.
How does ChatGPT decide which websites to cite?
ChatGPT cites websites when it uses search to answer a question. It retrieves candidate pages, writes an answer, and links to the pages that answer rests on. Two things decide whether you're one of them: whether ChatGPT can retrieve your page at all, and whether your page contains a sentence worth quoting.
OpenAI documents the crawlers involved. OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features". ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user's request needs them, and OpenAI says it "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search". GPTBot collects data for model training and is separate from search (OpenAI, "Overview of OpenAI crawlers").
OpenAI doesn't publish how it ranks or chooses sources once pages are retrieved, so anyone claiming to know the exact formula is guessing. What you can observe across many queries is consistent: pages that state a clear answer near the top, in plain sentences, get quoted. Pages that circle a topic don't.
Step 1: Make sure ChatGPT can reach your site
ChatGPT can't cite a page OAI-SearchBot can't reach. This is the most common reason a business never appears, and the quickest to fix.
- Check robots.txt. Open
yoursite.com/robots.txt. If it blocks all bots, or names OAI-SearchBot in aDisallowrule, you're opted out of ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI says opted-out sites "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links". - Check your firewall and CDN. Bot protection from your host or a security plugin can block crawlers even when robots.txt allows them. OpenAI publishes the IP ranges OAI-SearchBot uses so they can be allowed explicitly.
- Decide about GPTBot separately. Blocking GPTBot keeps your content out of model training. It does not remove you from ChatGPT search, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
- Give it a day. OpenAI notes it can take around 24 hours from a robots.txt change for its systems to adjust.
Step 2: Find the questions your buyers ask ChatGPT
You get cited for answering a question, so start with the questions. Not keywords. The questions people type into ChatGPT are longer and more specific than search queries, and they often include the comparison they're making.
Write down ten to twenty questions a buyer asks before hiring a business like yours. Good sources are your sales calls, your inbox and your proposals. Typical shapes:
- "What does a [service] cost for a company our size?"
- "What's the difference between [your approach] and [the usual approach]?"
- "Which [type of business] in [place] specialise in [niche]?"
- "Is [service] worth it for [specific situation]?"
Each question needs one page on your site that answers it better than anything else. If no page exists, that's your content plan.
Step 3: Write answers ChatGPT can quote
ChatGPT quotes sentences that answer part of a question completely on their own. Most business websites are written to sound good, not to be quoted, which is why they rarely are.
Rewrite your key pages to these rules:
- Answer first. Open with a 40 to 60 word direct answer, before any background.
- One claim per sentence. "The Core engagement takes two weeks" can be quoted. "Our flexible process adapts to your timeline" can't.
- Name your business. Write "Alchelyst recommends", not "we think". A sentence lifted out of your page still has to say who's speaking.
- Use your buyer's question as the heading. It mirrors how people prompt ChatGPT.
- Source every number. Name the source and link it.
- Take a position. If ten pages say the same thing, ChatGPT has no reason to pick yours.
That last rule is the one most businesses skip, and it's the one that matters most. If your marketing sounds like your competitors, the answer ChatGPT gives can be written without citing anyone. The fix for that starts with deciding what your business believes, not with the page.
Illustrative example, using a placeholder name. Before: "Acme Accounting provides comprehensive financial services tailored to your needs." After: "Acme Accounting does bookkeeping and tax filing for e-commerce businesses selling in Canada and the US. It doesn't take clients outside e-commerce." The second version answers "Which accountants specialise in cross-border e-commerce?" The first answers nothing.
Step 4: Make your business easy to describe accurately
ChatGPT describes your business using everything it can find, not only your website. If your site, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directory listings describe you differently, the answer reflects the confusion.
Pick one plain sentence that says what your business does, for whom and where. Use it everywhere. Make your name, address and contact details identical across every profile, and name the founder on your site and link them to the business. Structured data, such as Organization schema, makes these facts easier for machines to read, but it can't fix inconsistency that's already out there.
Step 5: Check what ChatGPT says about you, every month
The only reliable way to know whether you're cited is to ask. Once a month, put your question list into ChatGPT with search on and record three things for each answer: whether you're mentioned, whether you're linked, and whether the description is accurate.
Check your analytics for referral visits from chatgpt.com too, which shows whether citations turn into visits.
What doesn't get you cited by ChatGPT?
These come up constantly, and none of them work on their own:
- Publishing in volume. Fifty generic articles give ChatGPT fifty pages that say what it could already say without you.
- An llms.txt file as the strategy. It's quick to add and harmless. OpenAI's crawler documentation doesn't say ChatGPT search uses it, so it can't be the plan.
- Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI. Text written only for machines is a risk with search engines and, if a reader spots it, with them too.
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
Crawler fixes can take effect within a day or two. Content and consistency changes usually take months to show up reliably, because pages need to be re-crawled and other sources need to catch up. If you've fixed access, rewritten your key pages and still see nothing after a few months, the problem is usually that there's nothing on the page a competitor isn't also saying.
The full method behind this, including Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity, is in what answer engine optimisation is. If you'd rather have someone run it, here's what a good AEO service should include.
Frequently asked questions
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my website?
No. OpenAI says GPTBot is used for training its models, while OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT search. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot, which keeps your site eligible to appear in ChatGPT search answers.
Why does ChatGPT mention my competitors but not my business?
Usually for one of three reasons: OAI-SearchBot can't reach your site, your pages don't directly answer the question being asked, or your competitors' pages make a clearer, more specific claim. Check crawler access first, then compare your page's opening sentences with theirs.
Can an agency guarantee my business gets cited by ChatGPT?
No. No agency controls what ChatGPT says, and its answers vary between sessions. A credible agency improves the likelihood and accuracy of citations and measures the trend over time. Treat any guarantee as a red flag.
How can I tell if ChatGPT is sending traffic to my website?
Check your analytics for referral visits from chatgpt.com. Referral data undercounts AI influence, because many people read the answer without clicking, so pair it with a monthly check of what ChatGPT says in answer to your buyers' questions.
